Our Style

Prospective clients often ask “What is your style?”

Some architects prefer to hold fast to a personal signature style, one that identifies them in an iconic way. When you see one of these structures, you know who imagined it. The risk of this approach is that design can become an artifice that reflects the Architect rather than the specific needs of a client. The client then becomes the servant to the master of style.

Historic architectural styles typically developed from both pragmatic and artistic influences. Structures were built from locally available materials by skilled craftsmen in response to the practical needs of function and climate, as well as creative influences such as religion, politics, and culture. Many of these styles remain popular due to their classic details and practical design.

We believe there isn’t a singular style that is ideal for all clients, as each has unique life circumstances. Our approach to determining appropriate style is through inspiration in the design process. We explore with our clients - using images and examples - what excites and delights them. We ask pertinent questions about what makes them comfortable, what they consider to be functional for their lifestyle, what delights and inspires them. Along with this information, we can incorporate important practicalities such as the building site, climate and environment, materials, structure, context and aesthetics. Once we integrate our client’s values with other important influences, we can approach a style that is truly honest and inspired, one that uniquely embraces their aspirations.

An example of our approach to inspired design is a New Orleans mansion we designed for a client in the Historic Garden District:

Our client contacted us after the existing home, newly purchased, was destroyed in a major fire, leaving a blank slate upon which to build. This client was enamored with the Craftsman Bungalow style of home we had previously designed for their farm, and desired a similar aesthetic for their Garden District property. Due to the functional needs of their large family of twelve and the limitations on what the Neighborhood Association and the Historic District Landmarks Commission would allow in the Garden District, we recognized that Craftsman Bungalow design was not feasible or appropriate for this lot.

We turned to the influence of history for a solution. With the stylistic features of Craftsman that appealed to our client in mind, we researched the historic styles of the Garden District at the Southeastern Architectural Archive on the campus of Tulane University, seeking out any similarities with features of the Craftsman style.

Ultimately the Queen Anne Style, which shares some common craft and detailing language with the Craftsman style, but in a more majestic and grand massing & presentation, proved to be ideal. This solution achieved the values and desires of our client, while also satisfying the requirements of the two regulatory organizations. Additionally the style included many appealing similarities of the Craftsman style – large porches, ample gathering spaces, ornamental detailing, fine woodwork, and focal fireplaces. The Queen Anne style allowed us to incorporate many locally available materials and trades, compliment the aesthetics of the Garden District, and achieve our client’s dreams of a comfortable and beautiful home for their grand family.

We look forward to getting to know your style.
